“Let’s protect the islands” is a new project of LAG 5 and partners
Cigarette filters are made from a type of plastic that is not biodegradable and contains harmful chemical compounds that endanger the environment and the health of people and animals. Cigarette butts that end up in the sea are particularly dangerous because just one can pollute up to 500 liters of water, and decomposition takes up to five years.
The project provided 2,100 pieces of eco-bin ashtrays for beaches and the production and printing of stickers for them, the production and printing of bilingual posters and leaflets to inform visitors and local residents about the harm of leaving cigarette butts in nature, as well as other similar environmentally harmful behaviors. All printed material has the donor’s logo, and the distribution of all materials started recently in cooperation with local tourism service providers (agencies, renters, restaurateurs, OPGs, trades) and in the offices of the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Lastovo, the Municipality of Lumbarda and the city of Korčula.
The project is financed by the Ministry of Regional Development and European Union Funds in the amount of EUR 5,652.00 through a public call for applications for projects to encourage the development of civil society on the islands in 2023. The duration of the project is from October 1, 2023 to October 1, 2024, and the project holder is LAG 5, while the partners are TB Lastovo, TB Korčula and TB Lumbarda.

Motivated by the positive outcomes that we can influence and thus contribute to our community, LAG 5, by implementing the project “Let’s keep the islands” at the suggestion and idea of TZ Lastovo, ensured the free distribution of eco-bins in its area. Eko-bin (Eng. “bin” = container, trash can) is a small and functionally designed container for temporary disposal of non-biodegradable small waste. Due to its ecological function and long-term use, the eco-bin is made of environmentally friendly, recycled and non-combustible plastic that can be maintained and recycled again.
