The first loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nest has been discovered in Croatia!
On September 10th, 2025, at Pržina beach in Lumbarda, Korčula, Mr. Branko Ćeran spotted about 15 tiny hatchlings making their way to the sea. This marks the first documented nesting of a loggerhead turtle in Croatia! ![]()
![]()
Loggerhead turtles usually nest in Greece, Turkey, and Cyprus, and nesting in the Adriatic has so far been extremely rare. The discovery on our shores shows that the Adriatic Sea is becoming an increasingly important habitat for this endangered species.
If you notice tracks on sandy beaches (resembling small tractor marks) or hatchlings heading to the sea:
take a photo,
note the location, and
report it to experts!
Important: Never dig up or disturb a nest! Make sure hatchlings have a clear path to the sea.
Who knows – maybe these very hatchlings will return in 20 years to lay eggs on the same beach.

A Celebration of Tradition, Sustainability, and Island Flavors
The Slow Food Festival Korčula is a unique event dedicated to promoting local food production, preserving culinary tradition, and laying the foundation for the island’s sustainable development. At the heart of the festival is the idea that food systems should be local, fair, and environmentally sustainable, while the values promoted by the festival serve as a model for resource management and the development of regenerative tourism – tourism that does not deplete, but restores.
The island of Korčula, especially the Town of Korčula, has already been recognized as an important eno-gastronomic destination, where authentic cuisine and local agriculture blend with world-class gastronomy. Thanks to the strong development of island wineries producing high-quality, distinctive wines, as well as restaurants proudly bearing Michelin stars and recommendations, Korčula has successfully positioned itself on the global gastronomic map. In addition, products such as the traditional Lumblija (PGI) and Korčula Olive Oil (PDO), both protected at the European Union level, confirm the high level of quality and authenticity of the island’s offerings.
More Than a Festival – A Movement for a Better Island Future
The Slow Food Festival is not just a gathering of food enthusiasts – it is a platform for knowledge exchange, a meeting point of tradition and innovation, and a tool for strengthening the local community. The festival brings together producers, chefs, winemakers, scientists, activists, and tourists around a common goal: the preservation of the island’s cultural and natural heritage.
In the context of global climate challenges and the growing problems of mass tourism, Slow Food Korčula responds with concrete actions – encouraging organic production, preserving old varieties, educating both locals and visitors on the importance of seasonal and local diets, and promoting sustainable business models. An increasing number of restaurants and producers are adopting sustainable practices, returning to traditional recipes and food processing methods, and investing in quality rather than quantity.
The Slow Food Festival thus becomes a space for dialogue, education, and inspiration. It motivates the community to think about its own future – not as a passive observer, but as an active participant who protects resources and shapes development in harmony with people and nature. This is why the festival has the potential to become a best-practice example for the entire region.
